Shibari Teaching
My approach to shibari has evolved from 18 years of practice on both sides of the ropes, and a diverse range of influences which I appropriate, blend and develop in my own practice. As a teacher, I strive to reflect the experience of both tying partners on a deep level.
Rather than prescribing rigid techniques, I have a strong belief that shibari should be approached as a versatile set of tools. I encourage my students to explore and adapt each tie to the individual body of their partner, tailoring it to their specific needs and desires in any given situation. Embracing the inherent flexibility of this art form is fundamental to my style. To facilitate this process, I provide a comprehensive framework rooted in fundamental principles such as safety, efficiency, and fluency. Moreover, I emphasize the significance of body awareness, effective communication, and the conscious consideration of personal experiences and motivations.
My technical style has naturally evolved through keen observation and firsthand experience. Previously, I had the privilege of working professionally as a shibari model, offering me the opportunity to be tied by accomplished practitioners from Japan and Europe. These encounters have enriched my knowledge and repertoire with invaluable techniques and insights. Presently, my focus centers on the exploration of movement both with and within ropes. This ongoing research fuels my passion for pushing the boundaries of shibari and continuously expanding my understanding of its possibilities.
Private classes and group workshops in Berlin
I primarily teach from my studio ‘Daruma’, located in Neukölln, where I also run a weekly rope jam, and many other events. To find out more, click the links below.
Teaching outside of Berlin
While the majority of my workshops take place in Berlin, I am open to considering a limited number of bookings each year in other locations. If you are a local organiser and are interested in arranging a workshop with me in your area, please feel free to contact me for further discussion, rates, and conditions. You can view some of the workshops I offer at this link or, alternatively, I am happy to customise workshops to meet the specific needs, levels, and interests of your group.

My book “Shibari Suspensions: a step by step guide” was published in 2019. You can order a copy direct from me at this link. This is currently the only place the profits from your purchase go to me as an individual rather than a larger business, so your support is hugely appreciated.
You can read some reviews of the book here.

“Gestalta’s teaching style is very sympathetic to me personally. They impress with great professionalism and serenity. Getting knowledge from them is one thing, watching the tie is another; there was enough space, space and time for both.” ~ NS
“This weekend was really very special. Gestalta’s teaching is very well constructed; you can understand everything very well even with not so good English skills. Their calmness when tying was also transferred to me, which is very beneficial for the learning situation.
I found my joy in suspensions again. Thank you so much Gestalta.” ~ RW”What can you say: Gestalta has a reputation for good reason and their teaching style and contents are second to none. Shibari is not always the ‘ryu X’ and the ‘fundamental system Y’. Years of modelling and years of rigging with the best in the world ensure an incomparable workshop and extraordinary benefits. In terms of Shibari, some of the male ‘greats’ of the scene could teach themselves to cut a slice.” ~ DE
“Cannot recommend Gestalta enough for their private lessons – a wonderfully knowledgable and patient teacher able to tailor the classes to your needs!” ~ MH
